In Topic: Japanese Zero at the airport
Posted 27 May 2010
I got an email about this post from MAM Member Doug Grant. He writes:
This Zero is from the Fargo Air Museum. They took it and the Mustang up to Grand Forks last weekend. It is not completely original there is a plate on the front of the engine that says Lycoming - I don't know if it is one part or the whole engine. If you look close at the video you can see the wing tips tilt up. It is only about 12". The plane was originally a land based fighter - when they put them on aircraft carriers the width of the elevator was that much smaller than the wingspan of the Zero! By the end of WWII the Zero was not seen as a particularly good plane and those that were not destroyed/sacrificed in battle were nearly all scrapped. I don't know if this is the only one flying, but if not there are very few others.
